Design proposals for the renovation and re-use of an historic Grade I listed Hawksmoor Church
The proposals included social spaces and display galleries. The existing church was seriously damaged during wartime bombing and had remained in a semi-ruined state for many years.
The design was to maintain the history of the building but, rather than trying to rebuild the historic fabric, the proposal sought to stabilise the historic structure and insert a contrasting light weight contemporary steel construction within the historic masonry shell. The steel structure providing a strong and economic support armature for the damaged historic masonry shell, whilst also allowing a clear reading of the history of the building and providing flexible social and display spaces.
