Traditional Village Housing Development in Buckinghamshire
Enhancing Heritage Through Thoughtful Design
This sensitive residential development was designed to respond carefully to its location within the Great Horwood Conservation Area in Buckinghamshire. The proposals sought to introduce new homes in a way that respected the established character of the village and maintained a clear relationship with its historic setting.
We prepared a conservation area appraisal and historic characterisation study to understand how the settlement had developed over time. This considered the pattern and density of development, the scale and form of traditional buildings, local materials, important views and the relationship between the village and the surrounding landscape.
These findings informed the layout, architectural character and landscape strategy for the development. The homes were arranged to reflect the more informal qualities of the settlement, with their scale, proportions and materials drawing upon the local context. Existing landscape features were considered as part of the design, helping the development sit comfortably within the village.
The resulting scheme demonstrates how sensitively designed housing can respond to contemporary needs while preserving the qualities that contribute to the character and appearance of the Conservation Area.
