Profile
Alex Oliver Associates is a RIBA chartered architectural practice. Established in 1999, we have extensive experience in the conservation, restoration and adaptation of historic buildings, alongside the thoughtful design of new buildings within sensitive historic and landscape settings.
As architects and designers, we offer a comprehensive range of services that guide projects from the initial consultation through every stage of design and construction, culminating in a successful handover to our clients. Our commitment to quality and attention to detail ensures that each project is delivered with precision and care.
Design Approach
We are a dynamic team of architects who take great delight in creating fine architecture and environments. The buildings we design aim to strike a balance between formality and informality, drawing on the strengths of both traditional and modern architecture. We believe that good design is not a matter of style, but of substance, skill, and care.
Our design interests span the modern and the traditional. Our ambition is to create fine architecture through clarity of design, sensitivity to scale, and the elegance of harmonious proportion. Our buildings value tradition while responding to the needs of contemporary life.
We strive to create meaningful and timeless architecture that is responsive to each individual client and the broader environment. We are committed to sustainable, environmentally conscious design—using materials, technology, and craft to create beautiful buildings with enduring quality.
Our team is dedicated to providing the highest level of service. We work closely with our clients to understand their needs and aspirations, and to shape spaces that are both beautiful and practical.

Our process begins with detailed research into the site, planning context, and client brief. This informs a clear design strategy that is developed iteratively through concept, planning, and technical stages. Where appointed, we remain involved during construction to ensure the approved design is realised with care and attention to detail.
-
Cost and programme considerations are integrated from the outset and inform design decisions as the project develops. Through early feasibility work and close coordination with the wider consultant team, we ensure proposals remain realistic and well planned, while not losing sight of the overall ambition, long-term quality and wider context of the project.
-
We engage early and constructively with planning authorities and conservation officers, particularly on sensitive or designated sites. Our approach is research-led and policy-aware, allowing proposals to be clearly reasoned and presented in a way that responds to both statutory requirements and the specific character of the site.Item description

We work closely with clients, consultants, and contractors throughout the life of a project to ensure proposals are technically robust and carefully delivered. Collaboration is established early and maintained through regular communication and coordination, allowing design intent, programme, and site considerations to remain aligned from concept through to completion.
-
Our work is grounded in traditional architectural principles such as proportion, hierarchy, and materiality, while fully addressing contemporary requirements for comfort, performance, and regulation. This allows buildings to be robust, functional, and long-lasting without compromising architectural integrity.
-
Sustainability is considered as an integral part of the design process rather than as an applied layer. We focus on long-term durability, energy efficiency, thoughtful orientation, and appropriate material choices, alongside modern building technologies where they support the overall architectural intent.
Our Expertise
-

New Classical Design
We specialise in New Classical architecture—timeless design rooted in tradition, adapted for modern living. Our work combines classical proportion, craftsmanship, and elegance with contemporary performance, comfort, and sustainability. The result: refined, characterful buildings that feel both enduring and uniquely tailored to their place, purpose, and the people who inhabit them.
-

Conservation & Heritage
We have a proven history of working with listed buildings, drawing on our architectural expertise and deep understanding of each building’s historical context. Our approach aims to craft solutions that honor the original architecture while accommodating modern-day use, ensuring a respectful balance between preservation and practicality.
-

Sustainable Design
Sustainability is central to our design philosophy. We create buildings that are energy-efficient, comfortable, and environmentally responsible. Using a fabric-first approach, we prioritise insulation, airtightness, and natural ventilation—reducing energy use while enhancing wellbeing. Our aim is to design with quiet integrity, creating places that respect their context and endure over time.
