Classical Villa in Historic Parkland

An Italianate villa within a nationally significant historic parkland

This project responds to a highly distinctive brief: the design of a substantial new classical villa within a nationally important Conservation Area and Grade I Registered Parkland, adjacent to several listed structures of architectural and historic significance.

At 19,500 square feet, the villa represents a major new architectural presence within the landscape. The design carefully mediates this scale through considered massing, the use of axial and localised symmetries, and a disciplined classical proportioning system — ensuring the building remains both graceful and contextually appropriate.

Inspired by both regional historic houses and the classical Italianate tradition, the villa is conceived in natural stone with a heavily rusticated base and a piano nobile that takes full advantage of the parkland views.

The rear elevation departs from the formality of the front façade, introducing a more relaxed arrangement. Multiple roof terraces create private outdoor spaces while preserving seclusion on this highly visible site. A refined winter garden, articulated in the Corinthian order, crowns a rear wing and offers a playful counterpoint to the solidity of the Doric stonework below — creating an unexpected and delightfully light-filled space.

Below ground, three levels of basement extend the living programme discreetly. Sunken courtyards draw in natural light, serving staff quarters, garaging, a pool suite, media room, wine cellar, and tasting room — all seamlessly integrated into the landscape without compromising its historic setting.
