Extending and remodelling a motor museum
Feasibility studies for extending and remodelling The Atwell Wilson Motor museum.
The museum collection had significantly out grown the storage and exhibition space available, the site layout was rather muddled, and the museum was not visible from the road, access involved passing through the domestic curtilage of the site owners. A site and building redevelopment plan rationalised the site layout to allow public visibility of the museum and improved highway access and a separate entrance from adjacent residential elements. The building redevelopment focussed on improved appearance of the museum, better presentation of the collection and the development of education, entertainment and refreshment facilities.
Alex Oliver Associates developed proposals take a poorly presented site, with agricultural style buildings, and to step up a level to provide a professional modern museum where the best of the collection could be presented to a high standard.
A funding scheme to enable the project to proceed was developed and advice was given with regard to the application process for a Heritage Lottery grant.
