Grade II* Listed Town House in Wiltshire
Renovation of a Grade II* Listed Town House
Kingsbury House is a Grade II* listed Georgian townhouse, it’s a prominent and important building within the market town of Marlborough’s townscape and is within the town’s conservation area.
Kingsbury House is one of two framed houses with a combined close to symmetrical frontage of decorative brickwork surmounted by prestigious pediments, sash windows, stone dressings and string courses, elegant porches and railings. The pair of traditional houses externally have high historical significance and heritage value and are part of a range of very high-quality buildings at the lower end of the road.
The building has seen much change of use within the last 90 years, most recently as a solicitor’s office and this had resulted in a significant loss of historic fabric internally and the addition of many crude modern interventions. Alex Oliver Associates were appointed to sensitively repair the buildings historic fabric and reinstate its use as a residential family home. As part of the maintenance programme that was drawn up for the exterior of the building the brickwork was repointed where necessary with lime mortar, the sash windows and doors were repaired and repainted and the stone window surrounds, and string repaired.
Internally the proposals retained any remaining historic fabric and features, removed modern partitions, and restored the building back to something closer to its original form and layout. The design provides a family home with modern facilities whilst retaining the character of the historic building and reintroducing an elegance to the interior the befits the Georgian heritage of the building.
