CALNE LEISURE CENTRE

The leisure centre is operated by a community partnership, who took over the responsibility from the Local Authority who had been considering closing the facility down due to running costs.

Board members approached AOA, to develop architectural proposals that fulfilled their aims of remodelling and extending the entrance and changing facilities, in order to enhance the visual appeal of the facility and the users experience, whilst also upgrading the building fabric to reduce running costs and improve the centres sustainability. The existing building is an unattractive 1970’s building that suffers from poor planning and the fact that the entrance position is not easy to locate on approach. The entrance is poky and unwelcoming, and the café facilities are tucked away on the first floor. The key aims were to making a welcoming entrance that would encourage social interaction, and could be informally supervised by reception staff rather than requiring dedicated café staff.
